In his book, Van Linjjen, relying on the work of women-kinemaetographers of socialist China, reflects on the causes of “failed feminism”, as well as the boundaries of the commercial mainstream and “elitist” culture. The author believes that the films of such directors as Van Pin, Juan Shutsin and Dong Ken were incorrectly interpreted as part of the research paradigms, rooted in the Western ideology of the Cold War period, the cultural feminism of the second wave and intellectual discourses of the postmaois period. Van calls for a critical reassessment of works created under the auspices of socialist feminism in order to form a holistic and independent idea of this material, promising for the cultural practices of the future
