Two years ago, a research group of earthlings of eight people disappeared on the planet Midgard. Now the new expedition sends a rescuer for them, the purpose of which is to find survivors or identify the bodies of the dead, as well as destroy all traces of possible contact of natives with earthlings. There is a local humanoid civilization at the Midgard, frozen in the early Middle Ages and somewhat reminiscent of the Scandinavia of the Viking era. Any electronics refuse here, any advanced technique breaks down, but the rescuer, or as his local, night wanderer will be raised, is changed at the biological level, he is faster and stronger than any resident of Midgard. Only the earthlings or the wanderer himself still know that the similarity of this world with the Earth is deceptive, that real monsters are found here, and the rescuer, and at the same time the inhabitants of the planet, will have to face genuine horror and madness, which are not amenable to rational explanation
