Herbert George Wells is a kind of national treasure of England. He was considered the second Jules Verne, the singer of progress, a science fiction science of the number one era of Einstein. Contemporaries often called him simply on the initials: G. D. or Herbert George, as if universal acquaintance, and it was clear to everyone that we were talking about Wells. There was no familiarity in this, this was an expression of unconditional respect and sympathy for the writer, whose work became iconic at the turn of the 19th and twentieth centuries.
Nowadays, interest in Herbert Wells is only growing, despite the fact that his masterpieces are over a hundred years old. Wells was the first to make science fiction not a topic, but a literary technique that used to criticize his modern society. Developing the theme of the future people, Wells moved to a utopian (or anti -utopic) genre. In the novel “When the Sleep,” the Englishman of the 19th century wakes up into a two -hundred -year animation and wakes up in a totalitarian society, where a person is only a living car. He leads the uprising for people"s freedom, and even death is not able to stop him. The topic of utopia and evolution of mankind is continued in the novel "Food of the Gods".
In the works of Wells of the pre -war period, the theme of the catastrophe is heard through which humanity should pass before the general utopia of freedom, equality, and fraternity. In his science fiction novels, Wells foresaw the appearance of buses, escalators, answering machines, central heating, automatic doors and many other useful inventions of the twentieth century. And perhaps the future will still reveal to us the secrets of invisibility and travel travel
