Friedrich Maximilian von Klinger, in Russian service — Fyodor Ivanovich Klinger (1752 — 1831) — was a German poet, playwright, and novelist, author of 23 dramas and 14 novels. A childhood and youth friend, and literary colleague of Goethe. Klinger lived in Russia for over half a century. A talented scientist and enlightener who sold his soul to the devil, driven by a mad thirst for knowledge of the truth and a dream of universal happiness. Thus, in 1791, even before the appearance of the great Goethean tragedy, Klinger, a contemporary and friend of Goethe, presented the legendary Faust. In his book, he leads Faust through all the circles of European hell. In the novel, alongside fictional characters, genuine historical figures who gained a grim fame are also featured, such as English King Richard III, the great inquisitor Torquemada, Cardinal Cesare Borgia, his sister Lucrezia, and their father, Pope Alexander VI. Some traits borrowed from the biography of the German first printer, Gutenberg's companion, Johannes Fust, were mixed into the image of Klinger's Faust. Klinger's Faust — a first printer and a host of devils with Satan himself at the helm — enthusiastically welcomes the invention of printing.
