How did fashion infiltrate museum collections and exhibitions? When and how did the first exhibitions dedicated to costumes appear? The book by Canadian researcher Julia Petrov tells the history of fashion exhibitions in the 20th century - from the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 to Alexander McQueen's exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in 2011. Drawing on archival materials and scholarly works dedicated to fashion and museum studies, the author examines the ways of representing exhibits, conceptual foundations, and strategies for forming exhibition narratives that emerged in the 19th century and have since remained largely unchanged. The book, structured thematically, can serve as a guide to the world of fashion exhibitions, which have been gaining increasing popularity in recent years and helping even skeptics see clothing as an object worthy of academic research and representation in museum spaces. Julia Petrov is a curator at the Royal Museum of Alberta, specializing in visual culture, fashion history, and museum studies.
