On September 2, 1941, exactly a week before the complete blockade of Leningrad, a train departed towards the West to meet the Hitler army. Children from the Frunzensky district of Leningrad were being evacuated. Less than a day later, at the Dno station, the train came under bombardment by German aviation. This marked the beginning of the journey into a new life for hundreds of thousands of Leningrad children. From the Volga to the Urals and beyond, the "evacuated" children found shelter in boarding schools - initially referred to with surprise, then with hostility, and eventually with love by the local residents.
After the war, the educators - former teachers and school principals - were proud that they managed to return as many children to Leningrad as they had taken away during the evacuation. Everyone survived! This was their main, almost sole goal: the children had to survive. And return.
This book is dedicated to the bright memory of teachers, educators, and the children who grew up in orphanages.
