Nikolai Vasilievich Speransky (1861–1921) - historian, philologist, teacher, translator, publicist, author of scientific works on linguistics and history of the European school, employee of the newspaper Russian Vedomosti, one of the organizers of the Moscow City People"s University named after A.L. Shanyavsky. In the book “Witches and Vedasy ...”, first published in 1905, the author explores the searched and persecution of witches by European society and the Church in the XV-XVII centuries. The book shows how folk and church ideas about the witches and their “master” Satan were formed and developed during the struggle of the Church with the heretical movements of Western Europe, the most high -profile trials in the case of witchcraft are described.
