In 1936, Alexander Melentyevich Volkov drew attention to the composition of the American writer Frank Baum Sage from the country of Oz. After the author’s processing, this fairy tale turned into the now famous story “The Wizard of the Emerald City”, the first version of which, closer to the original tale of Baum, was published in 1939. The success of the story was largely determined by Volkov’s talents, and they were diverse. The future writer at the age of five had already read Main Read, and at twelve he began to write the first novel. After graduating from the Tomsk Pedagogical Institute, in seven months he passed the course of the Faculty of Mathematics of Moscow University. In addition to the “wizard”, the final edition of which appeared in 1959, Volkov had many other works for children and adults, but it was the cycle of books about the adventures of Ellie and her friends that made him one of the most read children"s writers in Russia. After the “Wizard”, his books “Urfin Juss and his wooden soldiers”, “Seven underground kings”, “The Fiery God of the Marranes” “Yellow Fog” and “The Secret of an abandoned castle” were published. The drawings for the processed text of the “Wizard of the Emerald City” are made by the talented artist V. A. Chizhikov. Back in his student years, he began to cooperate with the magazines Crocodile, Funny Pictures and Murzilka. Chizhikov illustrated more than two hundred books, including the works of Andersen, Chukovsky, Mikhalkov, Milna, Kuddyra, Marshak and Uspensky. In 1981, Chizhikov became an honored artist of the RSFSR, and in 2016 - a People"s Artist of the Russian Federation
