Aunts of 11-year-old Stella Montgomery severely punished her for a bad, from their point of view, behavior-sent to wormwood wasteland, an old family mansion. Stella will have to live there with cousins Straidfort and Hortens and their governess Miss Araminter. Stell is scared by such prospects: with cousins it is unfamiliar, and all governesses are evil and strict. However, having got into wormwood wasteland, Stella understands that she was mistaken! Miss Araminter is the most unusual governess in the world, and Straidfort and Hydrangea are happy to make friends with Stella. But terrible things take place in the wormwood wasteland: children from the district disappear, like many years ago ... Stella suspects that all this is somehow connected with the oddities that are happening in the old mansion, and with unusual birds and animals living in the overgrown garden . Stella, Straidfort and Hydrangea take the investigation, because this time their new friend disappeared!
