The end of the XIX century, the small county city of the Moscow province. The young girl Nastya, the daughter of one of the richest city merchants, Afanasy Skastunov, falls in love with the son of a shoemaker Nikolai. However, the father plans to play the wedding of the daughter with the son of another local merchant Savely Trifonov, so that, by uniting capital, they can participate in obtaining a concession for the construction of the county railway.
