Georgy Nikolaevich Vladimov (1931–2003) was a writer and human rights activist. He was a laureate of the Russian Booker Prize. The novella "Faithful Ruslan" is dedicated to the remarkable fate of a guard dog who becomes unwanted by anyone after the camp is disbanded. The fate of the text is also remarkable: in the 1960s, it could have been published in "Novy Mir," in the 1970s it was smuggled to the West, and in the USSR it was only published in the late 1980s, instantly becoming a literary sensation. The book also includes the novel "Three Minutes of Silence," a truthful and captivating narrative about a perilous sea voyage and the people of the sea, the last romantics.
