Fables

Ivan Krylov's fables (1769-1844) were met by the writer's contemporaries with great interest. The reading public laughed at the allegorical pictures, remembered the witty judgments of the fabulist. The publication of his books became the main events in the literary life of Russia. During his lifetime, he was called great and popular. But even now, we are amazed by his wise understanding of life and his remarkable skill in creating poetic images, the precision of his words, and the colorful language of Krylov. Illustrations for the classic fables were created by Yevgeny Mikhailovich Rachyov (1906-1997). They immediately became part of the golden fund of book illustration. Y.M.
