This supersonic aircraft with a triangular wing, which became one of the symbols of the Cold War, served as the primary all-weather interceptor of the US Air Force for a whole thirty years - from 1959 to the end of the 1980s. The Convair F-106 Delta Dart (or simply 'Six') was specifically designed to intercept Soviet supersonic strategic bombers, which were feared in the Pentagon. Armed with guided missiles (including nuclear warheads), it was meant to perform high-altitude interceptions at truly furious speeds of Mach 2. The F-106 remains the fastest single-engine jet aircraft in the history of world aviation. The highlight of the 'Six' was its unique fire control system, which formed a single combat complex with the ground-based air defense system. Although fleets of Soviet bombers never appeared near the North American continent, the Convair aircraft successfully intercepted individual Tu-95 and Tu-16 aircraft, which were displaying the USSR flag near the US borders. A new book by a well-known aviation historian, for the first time in domestic literature, details the creation of the famous F-106, its design, armament, modifications, combat service, as well as its participation in NASA scientific research and projects for the development of anti-satellite weapons. The publication is illustrated with numerous photographs and drawings.
