The 1960s-1990s in Europe are often seen as a golden age: the economy was growing, along with the standard of living, higher education and healthcare became accessible to the masses, the welfare state flourished, and the dark totalitarian past with its nationalism and hatred was gradually being forgotten...
However, in reality, not everything was so smooth. Against the backdrop of unprecedented growth in the standard of living in Europe, a new, unprecedented movement of workers and students was rising. Italy, France, and Britain were shaken by massive strikes. Students were rising up. Thousands of young people across Europe were dropping out of school, careers, families - and going underground to fight for socialism with weapons in hand.
Their main enemies became NATO, capitalism, American hegemony.
Some of them heroically died in prisons and shootouts. Some betrayed the ideals of their youth and entered the liberal establishment. And some continue the struggle to this day - sometimes exchanging the gun for the pen, and sometimes never laying down their weapons.
This book tells the story of the leftist underground in Western European countries in the 1960s-1990s. About the 'Red Brigades' in Italy and the 'Red Army Faction' in Germany, about the Irish, Basque, and Catalan national liberation movements. About the guerrillas in France and the revolutionary struggle of British anarchists. About the expropriating revolutionaries from Denmark and the underground fighters of Belgium, about the Greek partisans and the revolutionary pirates from Portugal.
