Benedict de Spinoza led a life of simple virtue as a lens grinder in Holland. Despite this, he was excommunicated from the Jewish community in Amsterdam during his lifetime for heresy. After his death, his works were initially banned by Christian authorities for being atheistic, but later celebrated by humanists as the gospel of Pantheism. His book "Ethics Demonstrated in Geometrical Order" sheds light on this mysterious figure. Published posthumously by his friends after his untimely death at the age of forty-four, the Ethics uses Euclidean methods to explain a single entity, referred to as both 'God' and 'Nature', with mind and matter as two manifestations. This leads to modern insights on the unity of mind and body, the deterministic nature of events and actions, and the illusory concept of free will.
