Theologian, historian, church and public figure Anton Vladimirovich Kartashev (1875-1960) was a prominent figure of the domestic religious renaissance of the early 20th century, and later of the first wave of Russian emigration. His two-volume work 'Essays on the History of the Russian Church', first published in 1959, can be seen in the author's biographical context as the 'life's work' of one of the key thinkers of the Orthodox Church in the 20th century. However, it is also a highly significant text born in the Russian post-revolutionary emigration, which can be considered a major socio-cultural phenomenon of recent history. Kartashev's essays undoubtedly bear the traits of the domestic theological tradition of the synodal period. Yet, the book primarily presents a great historical picture, serving as an undeniable milestone in Russian church-historical self-awareness. This edition is addressed to theologians, religious scholars, historians, and all those studying the history of Russian Orthodoxy.
