The book of Mikhail Abramovich Gershenzon (1900-1942) is arranged in an unusual way - unusual, even for the Rusitov series, always accompanying "children"s" texts with adult articles and comments. The story of the noble robber, the defender of the poor and the thunderstorm of the evil and cruel rich ("Robin Hood"), beloved by the grandfathers and grandmothers of the current young readers, continues by the will of the compilers a large corps of "military" letters and essays. Writer, translator, editor M.A. Gershenzon left in 1941 as a volunteer to the front, to the militia. He fought for a year, in August 1942 he died and was buried in a mass grave on the border of the Moscow and Smolensk regions. All this year, he wrote to his wife and son a letter almost daily, from which the second part of the book was compiled. Published entirely or partially (but without substantial bills), they are selected so that it turned out like an epistolary novel - "year in war". And the book is completed by a large biographical article, telling and explaining how and why a talented and educated literary critic was carried away by the "project of creating a new person", which was carried out on a colossal scale in our country, as he (or tried) the writer in the service of the world"s first state of workers and peasants. "
These three parts of the book (each in its own way, but consistent in general) recreated not only the image of the author, sincerely and consistently walking along the way, who was chosen in his youth, but also the time that had fallen to him - the first half of the Russian 20th century
