The novel of the Nobel laureate, the Norwegian writer Sigrid Unset (1882-1949) was created based on the medieval epic about King Arthur and the knights of the round table. The historical material, as always with the writer, is only the background on which the tragic drama is played, the fatal love triangle: King Arthur-Gvinever-Lenselot. Unset masterfully depicts the psychological experiences of the heroes and their fatal end.
The story of King Arthur and his knights of the round table in the old days I corresponded many times in French and English books. Most of the presented here is recorded in a book written by Knight Sir Thomas Malori during the reign of King Edward IV in England, and was printed by the master of Caxton in the year of 1485 from the birth of Christ. I found something in other books or in ancient ballads. These books contain much more, I told only the smallest part, for many of these old stories are little interesting to people of our time. After all, customs, and times, and even the faith of people change, and they think differently about many things. But human hearts change little at all times ... "
