Since ancient times, the Finno -Ugric peoples lived in the forest expanses of the North of Eastern Europe and Western Siberia - from Finland and Karelia in the west to the Trans -Urals in the East. The myths of the Sami are close to Finno -Ugric mythology (in the old Russian -speaking tradition - Lopars) - hunters, fishermen and reindeer herders of the North.
Settled so widely, these peoples retained common legends. They had a common world created by a bird, illuminated by a polar star, a world in which the forest acted both as a source of food and as a monastery of evil gods
