The name of Alexander Nikolayevich Afanasyev is on a par with the names of prominent Russian scientists of the XIX century. His fruitful activity was distinguished by remarkable versatility. He proved himself as a thoughtful historian of culture and a researcher of Russian literature, jurist, ethnographer, folklorist and journalist. A special merit belongs to Afanasyev as the compiler of a collection of folk Russian fairy tales. Afanasyevsky collection (8 issues, 1855-1863) - an outstanding edition of not only domestic, but also world folklore. Having appeared the first and so far the only arch of Russian fairy tales in which they are presented along with Ukrainian and Belarusian, the collection laid the foundation for scientific collecting and studying the East Slavic fairy tale and became a truly folk book that played an exceptional role in the education of more than one generation of readers. Tales from this collection are translated into many languages and enjoy world famous. This collection is most often called the Collection of fairy tales Afanasyev.
