The most acute problems today have a fundamentally global nature. To ensure a long-term future, they require coordinated efforts on a global scale. However, the history of humanity has always been global. In this book, Jeffrey Sachs, a renowned economist and expert in sustainable development, turns to world history to show how we can address the challenges facing us and take advantage of the opportunities that arise in the 21st century.
Sachs describes seven waves of technological and institutional changes, starting from the settlement of the planet by humans through migrations over long distances and ending with reflections on today's globalization. He examines how geography, technologies, and institutions influenced the Neolithic revolution, the role of horses in the rise of empires, the expansion of land empires in the classical era, how world empires emerged after the discovery of sea routes from Europe to Asia and America, and the changes that occurred with the onset of the industrial era. The dynamics of these past waves, as Sachs shows, allow us to look at the processes unfolding today in a new light, specifically - globalization based on digital technologies. Sachs emphasizes the importance of finding new methods of international governance and cooperation to prevent conflicts and achieve economic, social, and environmental goals of sustainable development.
