Ephesus is one of the most remarkable cities in the world. It reached its peak in Ancient Ionia, relatively prosperously survived the era of Persian rule and the wars of the Diadochi, its residents erected the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, which entered the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. During the Roman rule, Ephesus firmly held the third place in the Mediterranean after Rome and Alexandria. Being a major trading hub from Europe to Asia, the city essentially became the capital of the wealthiest Roman province - Asia.
