Yury Karlovich Olesha (1899-1960) was called the "king of metaphors" among his contemporaries. Olesha did not know how to write "darkly and sluggishly," long and boring; his prose sparkles with brilliant images and aphorisms, with almost every paragraph being as concise and complete as a novella. The novel "Envy" (1927) is the pinnacle of Olesha's work and undoubtedly one of the peaks of Russian literature of the 20th century. The collection also includes stories by Yury Olesha and the book "Not a Day Without a Line" - diary entries that essentially represent the subtle and profound essayistic work of a sophisticated stylist and sensitive person.
