Global environmental functions of soils are considered: hydrosphere, atmospheric, lithospheric, general bioxfer and biogeocenotic. An environmental assessment of the structure, basic properties and regimes of soils is given. The sections of the functioning and dynamics of soils, the concepts of pedosystems, fertility and degradation are included. Modern soil quality management concepts, agroecological models for the formation of soil fertility, the principles of creating and the content of the red book of soils are presented.
