The proposed edition is dedicated to the study of the processes of creation and development of complex multi-element unities --- collocations, analytical forms, and phraseological units. The author's main focus is not on the formal aspects of the structure and semantics of English phraseological material, but on its functional characteristics. The issues of the real existence of lexical-phraseological complexes of various types: proper idioms, stable phraseological combinations, combinations of a verb and a prepositional adverb, are considered not in general, but in relation to the functional style and socio-cultural situation of communication. The book offers an original methodology for studying idiomatic phraseology as part of verbal-artistic creativity, taking into account such socio-cultural parameters as gender, social status, education level, and the profession of the speaker.
The bipolar nature of idiomaticity as a dynamic equilibrium of stability and linguistic creativity is revealed on extensive, authentic material extracted from contemporary English artistic literature, journalism, and scientific speech.
