Theoretical prerequisites for the transition of the maintenance and repair of the traction rolling stock of Russian railways from the system of planning and preventive renovation for mileage to the new energy-saving service on real maintenance condition are considered. The mechanisms of aging electrical insulation are considered. The analysis of absorption processes was carried out in multilayer heterogeneous insulation of traction electric motors.
New diagnostic parameters are proposed - the voltage of self -discharge and return voltage. The methodology for determining the residual resource of insulation of traction electric motors is given. Technical solutions are given for the implementation of new methods of diagnosing isolation.
