The foundations of a systematic approach to the analysis of modern power supply systems (SES) are presented. The main definitions necessary for understanding and assessing the complexity of the SES are given. The mathematical apparatus used to solve the problems of the creation, operation and development of SES is considered. A formalized description of modern SES is given, the need to expand the concept of "reliability" is noted, and the issues of cybersecurity are considered. Particular attention is paid to the tasks of assessing the reliability and effectiveness of SES structures, taking into account the development of distributed generation systems. Recommendations are given on assessing the probabilities of catastrophic situations and issues related to the assessment and risk management in ensuring the reliability of the SES.
