The contours of the devices for the first flights of a person into space - the "East" and "Mercury" - were just manifested on the drawing boards, and their creators already thought about what would happen next. To achieve the moon as the next goal, which seemed obvious in case of success in the "capture of the orbit", not only much more complex means were required - fundamentally new technologies were needed.
The calculated duration of the first flights into space was calculated for hours and days, the new task required to increase this time to weeks, and in the future, possibly months. To work on the lunar surface, it was necessary to master the exit of a person outside the hermetic cabin. After a prolonged flight in the pilot"s weightlessness, it was necessary to return to the ground safe and preservation, which means it was required to reduce overloads upon return - hence the need for the development of a controlled descent in the atmosphere. Future missions suggested solving problems for the search, rapprochement and docking of devices in space.
The simplest first spaceships were not suitable for the development of all these complex technologies: they were intended only to confirm the very possibility of human flight outside the earth"s atmosphere and test his performance in completely new conditions. To solve new problems, other, more adequate means were needed.
The creation of a fundamentally new technique that can immediately comply with new goals is a possible, but extremely costly option and time, which does not promise unconditional success. In the conditions of the unfolding space race, the idea of the appearance of intermediate ships, designed to stand the road from the first, was formed - quite primitive - devices to new, more advanced systems. About how and on what grounds the appearance of the “sunrise” in the USSR and "Dzhemini" in the USA was formed, how the tasks were solved, and this book says.
The publication is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of domestic and world rocket and space technology, but the main emphasis is on youth, which begins to get acquainted with astronautics and has only general initial training in this area. The book is complemented by a large number of illustrations, including those made specifically for this publication.
In the headings of the chapters, photographs taken by American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts were used in the flights of Mercury, "Dzhemyni", "East" and "Sunrises", as well as photographs from the NASA and Roscosmos archives
