Scientific ideas about friction, lubrication and wear of solids are set out. Modern provisions are considered that describe the physical essence of these processes both in the details of the machines and in the main conjugation of piston engines - a cylinder -piston group and a crooked -shaped mechanism. The methodology of rational design and choice of materials of the main rubbing parts of piston engines is described, aimed at minimizing their friction and wear. An analysis of typical and non -standard methods of tribometry of piston engines and examples of executed resource -saving technical solutions are given. The results of the calculated and experimental verification of the effectiveness of their application are presented.
