The methodology of modern design is described, based on innovation and marketing research on the competitiveness of mechanisms and machines. The design process is considered from the development of a business plan to the verification of the project. Design is carried out in accordance with the chosen target function of the product, the mathematical expression of which is the criterion of effectiveness. The criterion is proposed “probable effect - costs”, which is used at all stages of design to optimize the design, and then for the educational assessment of the course (diploma) project. Calculations of two -stage gearboxes on a personal computer are given.
