A description of modern ideas about the defects of the crystalline structure is presented that significantly affect the strength and plasticity of solids. A brief historiography of the science of strength and plasticity is given. The role of the internal structure (such as a crystal lattice, the nature of the intensity interaction) in the formation of the strength of crystalline solids is described. The geometric and energy characteristics, the atomic structure of point, linear, superficial and volumetric defects of the crystalline structure are considered.
