The book by Lev Mintz (1937–2011), a remarkable ethnographer and one of the leading authors of the magazine "Vokrug sveta" at the peak of its popularity, includes both well-known to readers and previously unpublished essays. No matter what Mintz talked about, he paid attention to such details of national life that other ethnographers often overlook. And in passing, he answered questions such as: how the concept of "daily bread" is translated into the languages of northern peoples, why the Vietnamese have one name in childhood and another when they grow up, how the word "tights" appeared in the Russian language, how raw fish indicates the origin of the Japanese, why the Navajo Indians make counterfeit sacred kachina dolls of the Hopi Indians... Everything he wrote was fascinating, and this book is no exception. The culture of everyday life in Mintz's presentation appears as a scattering of instructive stories - sometimes amusing, sometimes sad, but never boring. The book "Fascinating Ethnography of Everyday Life" is excellent scientific and educational literature, equally accessible to children and useful for adults.
