K. Borderiu considers the fashion of the last third of the 18th century in connection with the concepts of taste, health and beauty, explores the techniques of advertising fashion and its criticism. Making an excursion into the history of the court and city costume, the author concludes that in the formation of the original nature of the Russian fashion, Empress Catherine II played a key role. The unique style of the Russian court, combining the traditional love of luxury with the attitudes of the empress into the restrained and elegant style of clothing, formed the image of the country outside its borders. The author traces fashion trends in the context of political changes in the era and analyzes the change of fashionable guidelines of the Russian nobility depending on the outcome of wars, the configuration of political and commercial unions. The book helps to understand why Russian publishers of fashion magazines and authors of satire against fashion and fashionistas were often inspired by foreign models and how they creatively adapted foreign texts and images, transferring them to Russian culture
