Transdiagnostic model of strategies for working with close and dear ones of patients with mental disorders.
In this treatment guide, the authors provide mental health professionals with recommendations for implementing Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) - an exciting new method in which caregivers are the primary healing agents in treating their loved ones.
Initially developed for treating eating disorders, EFFT has evolved into a transdiagnostic approach that can be applied to any emotion- or behavior-based disorder, with varying relationship dynamics throughout life, including relationships between parents and children (even if the child is an adult) and romantic relationships. The authors describe how to teach caregivers advanced skills to support their loved ones through emotion and behavior coaching. Therapists will also explore joint strategies to strengthen healing bonds between the caregiver and loved one and heal relationship ruptures.
The book outlines methods for processing emotional blocks in caregivers, as well as approaches for clinicians to overcome their own blocks through supervision. Vivid examples illustrate the application of EFFT in various realistic scenarios. Handouts are included in the appendices, which are also available as resources for clinicians and practicing physicians.
