In a major airport in the city of Gubernsk, in broad daylight, the head of the local branch and the son-in-law of the owner of the insurance company "Granit," Eduard Maradinsky, are killed by a knife strike. Since the crime at the airport is too high-profile, a Moscow operational-investigative group arrives in Gubernsk. Its leader, Colonel Kuprevich, believes that the audacious murder has a psychological motive, and therefore invites Arkady Mikhailovich Kazik as a consultant - a psychologist who, with his very original vision of problems, has helped law enforcement agencies investigate crimes on more than one occasion.
