Michel Houellebecq's rise to global fame began a quarter of a century ago with the release of the novel "Elementary Particles". This was followed by planetary bestsellers "Platform", "The Possibility of an Island", "Submission", "Serotonin", "The Map and the Territory", the Goncourt Prize, and the Order of the Legion of Honor.
At the center of the sensational novel is the fate of two brothers. Each, in their own understanding, persistently seeks happiness in the surrounding world, which is not inherently designed for happiness. One of them, a scientist-biologist, makes a hypothesis about the possibility of radical changes in human genes, resulting in the emergence of a new species of "happy" people. Houellebecq allows these thinking beings, unaffected by human weaknesses and delusions, to judge the lives of our contemporaries and manages to do what few have accomplished: he truly shocks the public.
The novel was nominated for the Goncourt Prize, but did not win it. However, it received a kind of "anti-Goncourt" award - the "November" prize - and was recognized as the Best Book of the Year by the authoritative magazine Lire. It is published in a new translation by Maria Zonina.
