Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most famous women of Western European Middle Ages. The story of her life resembles a burlesque novel, where against the backdrop of political intrigues and the emerging courtly culture, motifs of love, hatred, profit, and a thirst for adventure intertwined. The granddaughter and heiress of the first troubadour and the most powerful ruler of Southern France, Duke William IX of Aquitaine, Eleanor inherited the indomitable spirit of her great ancestor. In an era when power belonged to men, she went against established traditions and never agreed to be merely a spouse, even of kings: Eleanor aspired to choose her own husband, manage her lands, and actively participate in political events. Not coincidentally, one of the brightest peaks of her life was her participation in the Second Crusade. Having been the wife of the French King Louis VII, she married the future English monarch Henry II Plantagenet and together they founded the strongest state of Western European Middle Ages - the 'Plantagenet Empire', consisting of England and a good half of France. Eleanor's sons were the celebrated knight-king - Richard the Lionheart and the notorious John Lackland. Living to eighty years old, Eleanor of Aquitaine went through the crucible of many temptations and trials, knew the bitterness of defeats and captivity, but always went against fate.
