The work of Ekkehard describes a hundred years in the history of the monastery of St. Gallen - the most important cultural center of the Frankish state and the Holy Roman Empire - roughly from the 850s-860s to 972. Unlike other monastery chronicles, the "History" stands out for its attention to the daily life of the monks. Ekkehard also included biographies of the most outstanding inhabitants of the monastery, who brought him literary and artistic fame - Notker the Stammerer, Ratpert, Tuotilo, and many others. The scenes of monastic life unfold against the backdrop of political turmoil and enemy invasions that marked that era.
