In the conditions of modern society, symbols, although they have lost their former apparentness, continue to play a significant role, and much more powerful. In the information stream, which literally absorbs a person daily, he needs a way to streamline data and simplify it for his perception. And the symbols perfectly perform this function. The problem is only in their polyphony - it is never possible to find a single interpretation that will be acceptable for everyone. So symbolic battles begin for the superiority of someone’s interpretation, when society and culture become a battlefield, and symbols become effective weapons. It becomes especially noticeable in the political arena. Analyzing the ideas of Alfred Shyutsa, Pierre Burdier, Irving Hoffmann, the political phenomenon of "solidarity" in Poland, etc., the author convincingly proves the power of symbols in modern society and their interdependence: symbols are created by society and, in turn, form society.
