The hieroglyph is largely different from the already familiar letter. The history of Chinese writing goes deeper. Chinese hieroglyphs belong to the most ancient written signs.
Open the book and carefully consider the illustrations. Ancient hieroglyphs in appearance are not like modern ones. They resemble children"s drawings and arose from signs that scientists call icons, that is, drawing signs. They differ from ordinary drawings in that they depict only the most characteristic features of the subject. For example, you see that the drawing signs denoting a cow and a ram are very similar, but at the sign "cow" horn is bent up, and at the sign "ram" lowered down.
The artist with the help of illustrations clearly showed how the form of hieroglyph has changed gradually over the millennia - from a pictogram that has close similarities with real objects and creatures, to a modern sign of writing that is little like a drawing.
