The classic work of the famous historian Nikolai Alexandrovich Mashkin is devoted to the study of the circle of problems related to the concept of the Roman principle: as a political form and ideology, as a social essence, as an element of the genesis of the European civilizational model.
The scientific history of the principle begins almost simultaneously with its origin. And at present, it is difficult to indicate another period of ancient history, which would be discussed in historical literature with such constancy as the history of the principle.
The political order established by August was strong enough - this was confirmed by its preservation for the next three centuries. The reforms carried out by the princeps were combined with a noticeable regrouping of social forces: the position of provincial elites changes, regional differences are erased. A significant feature of the approach of the first Roman emperor is a combination of republican forms of management with a hierarchical secretion of the “first one among equal” citizen, capable of rallying people who are divided by exhausting civil wars.
