The attention of readers is offered a book by an outstanding philologist-novelist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences V.F. Shishmarev (1875-1957), dedicated to the history of the Italian language and covering almost the entire period of its development --- from the earliest times to the end of the 19th century. The process of formation of Italian speech has been traced from the end of the VI century on a number of Latin documents. Attracting extensive historical data, materials of written monuments of various dialects, as well as the results of his own research, the author considers all the main issues of the formation and development of the Italian language and its written (literary) use. In addition, the most vivid representatives of the culture of Italy, who played a large role in the formation of the Italian language, are described.
