The textbook is a continuation of a series dedicated to English irony and humor. In the first part - “English irony and humor in the context of cultural and communicative values” - an analysis of the causes, conditions and prerequisites in which the famous English humor are formed is presented, the patterns of its development are considered in close connection with cultural realities and the style of communication. This work is the second part of the manual and focuses on the functioning of the irony and humor in discourse, generating and interpretation of ironic statements. The functions, mechanisms and linguistic means of expressing irony, as well as the ironic masks used by speakers, are examined in detail. The manual is intended for a wide range of readers, uses modern material based on the political discourse of British and American statesmen, as well as interviews with cultural figures, artists, showmen. The manual proposes a number of questions and exercises for independent work. The proposed material for it will allow readers not only to understand the mechanisms and patterns of the functioning of English irony and humor, but will also teach to react to jokes and produce them on their own. The manual is recommended to be used in teaching the practical course of the English language, the course of rhetoric, the theory of discourse, and intercultural communication
