The attention of readers is offered a book by the famous American economist Edwin Seligmen, dedicated to the consideration of the doctrine, called "Economic understanding of history". According to this theory, the source of all changes in the social system are economic reasons, and these changes, in turn, determine the relations of social classes and the various manifestations of public life. The book consists of two parts. The first part sets out the history of the doctrine of the economic understanding of history, investigates the origin and development of theory, as well as its various applications. The second part of the book is devoted to criticizing the economic understanding of history. The author considers possible objections to this theory, and then makes an attempt to determine its real meaning and value for the modern science.
