The book of an anthropologist and theorist of culture Svetlana Boym (1959–2015) - a processed and supplemented English edition of 1994 - is an attempt to critical analysis of mythical representations that fastened the everyday life of Russia in the 20th century. The themes of its chapters are the specific concepts of Soviet culture (“life”, “philistinism”, “Russian soul”), socio-psychological relations in a communal apartment, fed by this material the artistic strategies of modern literature and art. The last chapters of the book are devoted to the post-Soviet ideological situation of the 1990s, with its characteristic features such as the transformation of the “stalk” into the ruling style of culture or nostalgia for the Soviet “great era”. Based on the modern Western theory of everyday life, S. Boym wrote a book in the genre of interested, temperamental essays, including the author’s personal experiences and direct journalistic judgments
