The book reveals various views on modernization, an interpretation of this concept in modern China is compared with the latest discussions of Western researchers on this issue. An attempt was made to combine a civilizational approach to the history of mankind with the original interpretation of the theory of modernization. According to the author of the book, the world is divided into two civilizations - legal and power, and in accordance with this division, modernization also breaks up into two types: Westernization as a transition from the second to the first and adaptation as an adaptation of power civilization to modernity. Institutional competition between the two civilizations reflects their incompatibility. Humanity does not have a common road to a single social order, but there are different ways depending on the choice of the modernization model. The book is addressed to all researchers in the field of social sciences.
