Today, few doubts that the modern city is created and changes largely thanks to digital technologies. However, there is still no consent regarding the role of citizens in an intensively technological environment. They are considered both as passive data generators and as obedient technologies. But it is impossible to ignore the fact that the townspeople today are actively involved in the redefinition of digital tools, that they not only master the advantages of networks, but also find their vulnerabilities, begin to influence the technology and control of cities in an increasingly complex and unpredictable way. The activity of citizens question the concept of a smart city as a city of technology, which has been developing under patronage of IT giants for several decades. The authors of this monograph - sociologists, urbanists, researchers of media and data - set new trends and move from the theme of “smart cities” to “smart townspeople”, from “digital optimism” to “digital realism”, from technocentrism to digital anthropology.
