The purpose of this educational manual is to determine the role of biotechnology in solving environmental protection tasks. The book provides information on the functioning of ecosystems, their stability, and resilience. It includes information on sources of pollution and major pollutants in ecosystems, such as organic compounds, heavy metals, and petroleum products. It shows how the biotransformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can occur, which microorganism degraders are involved in biotechnological soil and water purification from oil and petroleum products. It also presents the mechanisms of metal biotransformation and methods of their purification in industrial and municipal waste. The manual covers issues of organic waste bioconversion with the possibility of obtaining environmentally friendly energy.
