The textbook "Early Buddhism: Religion and Philosophy" consists of an Introduction, 13 chapters, a Glossary of key terms, and is dedicated to the main questions of studying early Buddhism. Among them are: religious and philosophical beliefs during the life of the Buddha (5-4 centuries BC), the Buddha's understanding of human nature and their role in the cosmos, the role of consciousness in determining individual destiny and the causes that involve people in the cycle of rebirth, as well as the possibilities of liberation from it. The evolution of the Buddha's teachings in later Buddhist directions (Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana) is briefly discussed. Each chapter thoroughly examines texts from the "Sutta Pitaka" ("Basket of Discourses") of the second part of the "Tipitaka" - the Buddhist Pali Canon of the Theravada school (many of which are translated into Russian for the first time). At the end of each chapter, there is a list of recommended literature and self-assessment questions. For students and teachers of humanities (religious studies, philosophy, cultural studies) and for everyone.
