The novel 'Dream of the Red Chamber', first published in its entirety in 1791, is not just part of the golden treasury of Chinese classical literature (alongside 'The Three Kingdoms', 'Water Margin', and 'Journey to the West') - in terms of writing style and plot structure, it is very close to the modern novel and, perhaps for this reason, enjoys special affection among readers. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of a great wealthy family that thoughtlessly squandered its riches, which brought upon them many troubles and misfortunes. The novel gained wide popularity for its elegant style, fantastic events, romantic adventures, and detailed descriptions of everyday life.
In the current edition, 'Dream of the Red Chamber' is printed according to the two-volume edition of 1958, however, the translations of numerous poems, which constitute an important part of the novel, are printed according to the 1997 edition, for which the translator Lev Nikolaevich Menshikov revisited and corrected his texts. The novel is accompanied by original illustrations by Chinese artists.
The first volume includes an introductory article by L. N. Menshikov and the first sixty chapters of the novel.
The second volume contains the last sixty chapters of the novel.
